From HOBY High to HOBY Coma and Everything That Follows

In the time since HOBY I have let this blog slip a little – ok, a lot – but I’m sure you can all relate as you went through your own HOBY exhaustion.

Bethany Johnson’s HOBY Story

My first step into HOBY I was welcomed by OUTSTANDING volunteers who were enthusiastic about me being there; a little shocked and uncomfortable I jumped in to the experience with both feet…my life has been forever transformed.

Day 3

Coming off of an inspiring Friday evening with Keynote Speaker Houston Kraft we dove right into Saturday morning by talking about Press Releases.  Our HOBY Washington friend, Sean Maginnis, joined us via Skype from Lafayette, LA where he works as a reporter for KLFY.  Sean explained to us how a press release can make or break attention your project may get from the media.  After a quick Q + A session we were running behind due to some Skype difficulties.  [...]

Day 2 – Morning

Day 2 started early when we welcomed local business leaders to our morning meal.  Despite the hour we had great conversations with leaders from science, non-profit, law and business.  The guests and students had great conversations and the students really impressed our guests.  Next stop was the theater where Co-LSC Jordan talked about Group Leadership before the groups headed off to their next challenge.  After Jordan spoke the students were informed that some “toxic waste” had spilled and they must [...]

Day 1

We had a great day that began with arrivals at 8 AM and is still going for many of us staff.  We have already made new friends and been exposed to new ideas.  Some of the highlights from the day include over $700 raised for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation during our Leadership for Service project, learned about post-high school options in the Life After High School Panel, learned some OUTSTANDING cheers and held the very first flash mob held by [...]

It’s not near, the seminar is here!

Most of our staff has arrived and we have successfully retrieved our first amby from the airport! I’m very excited for the arrival of the rest of our students and to share little snippets from the seminar.  Check back regularly for pictures and stories! Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates throughout the day!

Dalton, Anna and Bailey’s HOBY Stories

Dalton Walker As a new kid, my sophomore year in high school was a little complicated. I was an outgoing, spontaneous and dorky kid (still am) that was surrounded by “chill” peers who weren’t really outspoken. With such personal characteristics my counselor and schools HOBY alumnus recommended me to attend “HOBY.” Always up for something new I gladly accepted. From the first day I knew it was going to change my life. ENTHUSIASTIC and CHEERFUL other kids made me for [...]

Eric Martin’s HOBY Story

I can still remember the first moment I heard about HOBY. I was sitting in my Honors English classroom and on the television announcements I saw an ad which said that all sophomores should apply for a chance to “Change Their Life in Four Days.” At first I thought the idea was a bit far-fetched. Could a person really change their life in a matter of four days? Could one program really accomplish such a feat? Well, I was fortunate [...]

Jamie Utt’s HOBY Story

Many say they can’t believe it, but before HOBY, I was pretty shy. I didn’t talk much and kept mostly to myself in school. I think that mostly I was afraid . . . afraid of being made fun of, afraid of screwing up, afraid of taking risks. When I found out that I would be going to HOBY, I was pretty excited. I mean, despite my being shy, it is not my natural state. I saw HOBY as a [...]

Vivian Lautenslager’s HOBY Story

Hey HOBY it’s Vivian aka (snortz to some). I’m a HOBY alumni from the 2005 HOBYWA seminar. I want to tell you and will tell you how much HOBY has changed my life. Lets just say that before HOBY I was not the person I am today. I was shy and not outgoing at all. I was a lonely music loving farm girl from Eastern Washington. I had few friends and spent most of my time at home doing crafts. [...]
